Following through on its earlier preliminary vote, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has banned the sale of meals that include toys and do not meet certain nutritional guidelines that they determine. The Board’s vote of 8 to 3 means that Mayor Gavin Newsom will not be able to veto the measure as he had promised.

Newsom issued a statement on Tuesday saying that the city must continue to combat childhood obesity, but it should be up to parents what their children eat, not politicians, especially when spending their own money. Activists and other who supported the effort, hope the ban will spread to other major cities.

The measure was clearly aimed at McDonald’s and their Happy Meals. The company said that meals advertised to children already meet government nutritional standards, which limit total calories to 600 per meal and also limits the fat and sugar content.
