The liaison for Hispanic media in the office of Nevada Senator Harry Reid has been fired for her involvement in a phony marriage for U.S. citizenship. Diana Tejada is accused of the sham 2003 marriage to Bassam Mahmoud Tarhini, a Lebanese man who paid her money in order to gain permanent residency in the U.S.
According to Fox News, who broke the story, Tejada admitted to the arrangement in 2008, the year she joined the politician‘s office. In 2009, Tarhini pleaded guilty to felony charges of fraud and was deported earlier this year. Tejada’s marriage to Tarhini was ended by divorce in July 2010. For her role in the scheme, Tejada was not charged with any crime.
Reid’s spokesman Jim Manley said that Reid was not aware of the crime prior to the Fox News report, and accused the news outlet of “slinging mud about junior staffers to score points in the waning days of her campaign”, referring to Republican opponent Sharron Angle.
