When it comes to handing out legal settlements, there’s no place like D.C. ¬†According to The Washington Post, during the period from 2007 through 2009, the city doled out over $50 million in taxpayer monies for misdeeds such as age discrimination, false arrests, running over citizens and not properly maintaining city sidewalks. Compare that with nearby Montgomery County, Maryland, with 972,000 residents vs. 599,000 in D.C., which paid a total of only $8.5 million during the same period.

Although officials from D.C. point out that it’s the nation’s capital and there’s far more demonstrations in the city, there is nothing to suggest that the bulk of payments is in any way related to political¬†demonstrations. As one might expect, the city’s police department is the target of the greatest number of lawsuits. Is it time that the city examine its policies and attempts to bring its legal costs in line with other cities of comparable size?
