The mayor of San Gabriel, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, was arrested early today after a heated argument that led to the mayor taking a woman’s purse and driving off in his SUV.
According to police, Mayor Albert Y.M. Huang, 35, was arguing with the woman over money, grabbed her purse, and attempted to drive off in the woman’s car. After the woman blocked Huang from fleeing in her vehicle, he then got into his SUV and began to drive off. The woman reached through the passenger window of his vehicle and stood on the running boards, while Huang sped through residential neighborhoods at speeds up to 45 mph.
Police were alerted by a security guard at a local business, who arrested Huang on suspicion of felony robbery, suspicion of assault by means likely to produce great injury, and battery. There was no indication that Huang was intoxicated at the time, and the woman appeared to be uninjured.
