When he reported his 2001 Lexus sedan stolen, Los Angeles police officer Robert Villanueva had a pretty good idea of where it was: out in the desert where he abandoned and torched it for insurance purposes, according to authorities. With the help of fellow officer Ricardo Rebolledo who vouched for his whereabouts on the day of the crime, Villanueva submitted a claim to his insurance company for the loss of the vehicle.

On Monday, Villanueva was arrested at the police station where he works and charged with fraud, arson and filing a false police report. Rebolledo is expected to turn himself in today. If convicted, Villanueva faces a maximum sentence of six years in state prison and Rebolledo up to five years. Both men joined the police force in September 2009 and were still within their one-year probationary period.
