One of the largest ever Medicare fraud operation has been busted by Federal authorities, according to federal indictments unsealed on Wednesday. According to Department of Justice officials, over $100 million in phony Medicare claims had been submitted since 2006, although only $35.7 million had actually been reimbursed.

The majority of the 73 people charged in the indictment were Armenian-Americans, although a high-level organized crime figure from the former Soviet Union, Armen Kazarian, was taken into custody. Kazarian was considered a “vor”, the equivalent of a “godfather” and was residing in Los Angeles after obtaining political asylum from Aberbaijan in 1996. Prosecutors said that he drove a Rolls Royce Phantom, a car valued at over $350,000.

In addition to the Armenian group, others charged in the ring included doctors, lawyers and patients. Authorities said that the ring stole the identities of patients and doctors, including over 2,000 from the Orange Regional Medical Center in New York. The names were used to create fraudulent claims at 118 non-existent clinics in 25 states.
