One of the most liberal and citizen-conscious cities in the nation has done the unthinkable. Following the defeat in June 2010, of a ballot measure to create a special tax to rehab and maintain the city’s four pools, the city of Berkeley, California is filling in its swimming pools with mud.

Here's what Berkeley's Willard swimming pool looks like filled with mud.

Advocates of the tax blamed miserly residents, Proposition 13 and the conservative minority, for having to close city pools, despite paying its City Manager $245,324, its Director of Health $207,150 and dozens of firefighters and police officers over $150,000 per year.
